A few hours later, Baker brewed another small pot of coffee while Hewey brought the fresh horses in under the fading light of the moon, and they drank the coffee as they saddled up. They were well along by good daylight. It was a new trail to Hewey, but Baker had now been up and back, so there was no need to dawdle.

“I wonder, do you have any idea where on this earth we are?” Hewey asked after a couple of hours. “Not that it really matters, I’m jist curious. Might help to know when I tell this tale later.”

“Your guess is as good as mine,” Baker answered. “I know my own little part of Colorado, and this ain’t it. Maybe we’ll ask somebody.”

“That wide spot in the road up yonder,” Hewey continued, “does it have a name?”

“Not that I could see. I didn’t dare show myself, so it’s not like I could ask anybody, and there weren’t any signs or like that. Even the one buildin’ didn’t have a name on its sign.”

“Oh, well, I’ll just make somethin’ up, I guess,” Hewey told him.

“Would it be the first time?”

“You bet. I’m a strictly honest man.” Hewey said it with a straight face, but he couldn’t hold it long.
